Makeup is a very essential part of a girl’s life. Most of us can take over the world when we have our warpaint on. And putting it on and taking if off seems like one of the easiest things you have to do. Chances are, you’re so used to your regime by now, that you don’t even put any thought into it. And you may be doing it right, but what id you’re nit? What if by not paying attention, you’re ruing a little bit of your skin everyday. Fear not. Here are 7 ways to clean your face correctly. Make sure you’re following these to the T while washing last night’s makeup sins away.

1. Pre-cleanse:
One of the most important to-dos for makeup removal is the pre-cleanse ritual. Most experts agree that this is absolutely essential for your daily makeup removal routine. Dab a makeup wipe in your favourite cleanser and wipe off your face before you start your daily routine.

2. Face wash:
So you’ve wiped your makeup off, and it’s time for bed. Not just yet, ladies. Makeup and dirt have a way of clogging up your pores even after that first wipe. Make sure you’re washing your face thoroughly after your pre-cleanse with lukewarm water to really open those pores up and get all that residual makeup and dirt off.

3. How many wipes?:
This is one product you absolutely cannot be stingy with. When you apply your face on in the morning, there are 3 target areas you spend time on; base (face), eyes and lips. Follow the same regime when it comes to makeup removal, in the opposite order. Use different wipes for your lips, your eyes and your face. Mixing them up into one big wipe is just like redistributing your makeup into open pores in different areas. Not effective in the slightest, don’t you think?

4. Be careful with eye makeup:
Eye makeup is tricky. It can be extremely tough to remove your eye makeup fully, what with the eyeliner clinging on to those little spaces between your lashes. A separate eye makeup remover is absolutely essential for your makeup removal. Tae a cotton ball completely dipped in makeup remover, and hold it tight against your eye and keep it there. After a few moments, slightly rub from side to side with a little pressure to really get that eyeliner out.
If you notice that the mascara is still clumped around your lashes after your initial rub, we recommend taking a clean mascara wand and brush through your lashes to separate them and pull the makeup off.

5. Not too hot!:
So if lukewarm water is good to open the pores, hot water must be better, right? Wrong. Hot water is known to strip your skin of its moisture. And a dry face is a bane to sleep in, trust us.

6. Scrub with love:
Many believe that an apricot scrub with its sharp exfoliants is perfect for exfoliation. They’re right, but then they tend to use it daily, and there’s nothing worse than that. An apricot scrub (or something similar withe the crushed seeds and nut shells) is more of a once-a-fortnight routine. Choose a scrub with synthetic, non-abrasive exfoliants for your daily makeup removal routine.

7. Towel dry:
Yes, something as simple as a towel dry also can be done ineffectively. If you’re rubbing your face to dry it after your makeup removal, stop, now. You’ve already exfoliated with your scrub. If you rub your towel against your exfoliated skin, you’re running the risk of rubbing it raw, and you definitely don’t want that. Pat it dry instead.

It's probably the trickiest part of your makeup routine — but it's also the one that makes the most difference.

1. Overdoing it on the bottom lid.

Heavily lining your lower lid — especially with a very dark color — can make your eyes look smaller, says Mary Clarke, a product analyst in the Good Housekeeping Research Institute beauty lab. Plus, you're more likely to end up with under-eye smudges. If you want to define your lower eyelid, use a light pencil or, for an even more subtle look, a light brown or taupe eye shadow. Clarke recommends MAC Pro Longwear pencil, a top-performer in our tests.

2. Putting it on unevenly, resulting in a jagged look.

It's so frustrating to have to wipe off that line on your upper lid with makeup remover a million times before you get it right. To keep liner straight, avoid tugging at the outer corners of your eyes, makeup artist Laura Geller told Good Housekeeping. "This can cause skin to crinkle, and your line will not be as smooth." Try pointing your chin up and looking down, so your lids are half-closed but you can still see them. And if you're using gel liner, apply it with a slanted brush for a smoother look. You can also use a light pencil to draw in the line to give yourself a guideline.

3. Only using black and brown.

A little white or nude eyeliner on your bottom lid can work wonders to make you look more awake and refreshed. Gently pull on your under-eye and trace the line between the lower lashes and the inside rim.

4. Not knowing the differences between pencil, gel, and liquid.

Pencil eyeliners are best if you're in a hurry: They're the quickest to put on and resist smearing, Carl Ray, makeup artist to Michelle Obama, told Good Housekeeping. (Here's his easy tip for applying pencil liner smoothly.) Gel liners give you a more glam look, are water-resistant, and allow more control over line thickness. Our top pick: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. Liquid liners are the "advanced" kind. They apply more precisely, but you really need a steady hand to put 'em on. If you're a beginner trying a wing-tip or cat-eye, use gel instead of liquid. "Liquid liner is a powerful product that delivers a strong, fluid line," says makeup artist Sonia Kashuk. "Its intense pigmentation creates definition at the lash line and by controlling the thickness of the line, you can create a range of looks."

5. Not smudge-proofing.

Here's how to do it: Apply your liner with a pencil or a tiny brush, and then trace over the line with a matching powder shadow. To make it last even longer, wet your shadow brush with Visine first, Jo Davis, artistic director for Trucco Cosmetics, told Good Housekeeping.
